Mary's Place

A web page about the life of a lady who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Name:
Location: Piedmont, Oklahoma, United States

I live in Piedmont, OK, with my Husband of 50 years who has been very supportive. We have 2 sons,David and Kenny, 6 grandkids, and 6 great grandkids. I enjoy feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. Before I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I ran a Licensed Day Care Home for Infants for 15 years. I noticed I wasn't able to remember important things and having problems with my speech. I was experiencing severe headaches. I would get lost. I didn't know how to use the computer. At the age of 55, I told my doctor. I was sent for an MRI. which showed a large amount of shrinkage. I went to a neurologist who sent me for two days of testing. I was diagnosed with dementia of the Alzheimer's type. My husband and I were both in shock. I had to give up my job. I went to see a social worker. I've taken Aricept for 11 years. I can now use the computer and even do this web page. I also host a chat room for dementia patients. This is a very lonely disease. I don't want anyone to feel as lonely as I did when I was diagnosed (I thought I was the only one over 50 that had Alzheimer's). In 2006 I started taking Namenda. Also I was told I have a mixed dementia, Alzheimer's/Vascular.

Where has this month gone? I finished up doing the laundry, hosted the DASNI chat, and then I got cleaned up and I got out of the house finally. I hadn’t been outside the house in over a week… We picked up supper and took it to Martha. We had a nice visit with Martha and then came home… I am looking forward to going to bed tonight. For some reason I have been very tired lately… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

The sun came out today and most of the ice has melted. The sun also showed the dust in the house. So I had to dust, a job I hate… I took care of the houseplants, folded laundry, and played with the dogs… Every morning after the dogs have gone out to potty, we put them in bed with us and I get lots of kisses… Today was Alfred’s funeral, it was held in Independence, Kansas. We didn’t make the trip because of Dave’s back pain. The weather wasn’t good for traveling either. I have had Martha in my thoughts and prayers all day, It is so hard to believe that our friend is really gone… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

It was five degrees here this morning. Wasn’t it just a week ago that I said we were having 70-degree weather? When I got up this morning and looked out the window I saw that our Weeping Willow tree was laying on the ground. I thought sure it was gone due to all the ice. But as the day went by and it got warmer it stood up again… I went to the DASNI chat, vacuumed, fixed lunch, and supper… Dave is up at Kenny’s and I am here with the dogs. All three of them are in the recliner with me sleeping as I type on my laptop… I am watching the Girls basketball game. Baylor Bears and Oklahoma Sooner. President Bush and Laura are there at the game… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Last night's post. Internet was down.

Today would have been Dave’s Mother’s 100th birthday… 18 degrees with a wind chill of 5 degrees and we got more snow and sleet today… We have been drinking Cappuccino to keep warm… David and Carole called… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I called and cancelled and rescheduled an appointment that I had for tomorrow, I was getting real nervous about being out on the ice. I still remember the broken arms I have had from falling on the ice… All the schools are closed tomorrow and some people are without power… I cleaned the bathrooms, did laundry, and fixed lunch… I received a nice letter from Lynn, a school friend in South Dakota… Josh called… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I have been extra tired today and for good reason. Seems like I have been going everyday for a week. I like having a routine where I don’t have to go somewhere everyday. Today we went to pick me up a new leather recliner chair… I did laundry because the hamper was full and running over… I called David and Kathy… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Our dear friend Alfred passed away last night at 9:30. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Martha and all their family… Kathy was here at 6:30 this morning to pick us up and drive us to the hospital. Dave’s procedure went well. The Doctor said that everything looked good. That is just what we wanted to hear. On our way home we stopped at the Sub-Way Shop and picked up sandwiches… We both took a nap after lunch; mine was a short one because of Mindy. The joys of having a puppy… Joyce called… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Happy Birthday Norma!!! Norma is our friend in North Carolina... It was a warm 76 degrees today… We got that dreaded call this morning from Martha. She said the doctor told her to call all family and friends to tell them they needed to come now if they wanted to tell Alfred goodbye. Dave and I got ready and went to the Baptist Hospital where Alfred is. We spent a couple hours with Martha. Alfred didn’t know we were there but we did. I despise cancer… I took care of the houseplants and that is about all I did today… I am feeling really nervous and jittery tonight. I hope it will pass soon… Lori called and the nurse from the doctor’s office called saying Dave was low on potassium and he was to drink orange juice and eat a banana and Dave did that… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I had to get up really early this morning to get ready to go with Dave to Integris Southwest Hospital to be pre-admitted for his procedure on Friday. Doctor is doing a Cystoscopy, Retrograde, Pyelogram. I am thinking that means they are checking out his bladder and kidney. After we left the hospital we went to Tinker to pick up our prescriptions and get groceries. We also went to the BX where an Elizabeth Arden make-up artist made me up. I felt so much better when she was finished and looked much better too. I needed a pick me up. I left there with some new make-up. We got gas on base for $1.69… On our way home we stopped for a Braum’s treat, a Buttered Pecan Mix, Yummy!!! I helped put away groceries and fixed supper… I was having an Amelia attack. She is the new baby across the street that is two months old. I hadn’t seen her for a month or so. INAUGURATION DAY!!! Last night I asked Dave for a sleeping pill. It was the first one I have had in a very long time and I slept well. Woke up early and have been watching TV all day long… The inauguration was very impressive. I would like to give a big THANK YOU to President Bush for keeping us safe all these years… Welcome President Obama, our 44th president of United States of America… The first Inauguration I ever watched was for President Eisenhower. I was in school when our class watched it. I haven’t missed an Inauguration Day since that one… Dave went to have his hearing aid adjusted this morning… We sold Dave’s old desk today to a nice couple… Thank you Lynne and Diane for suggesting I lie down and rest in the afternoon. I will give it a try… I am going to watch American Idol tonight… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Dave went with Kenny this morning to the airport. Kenny wanted to update his pilot training so was meeting the instructor pilot at the airport. Dave went along for the ride. They flew over our house and I ran out to wave at them… I stayed home to run the Hotel for Dogs. LOL I watched a movie “Father Goose”… When Dave got home he realized he didn’t have the cell phone so called the pilot and he found it in the plane along with his earplugs. So Kenny, Kathy, and I rode with Dave to the pilot’s home to pick up the phone. On our way home we stopped at the Subway shop for supper… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Happy Anniversary to Alan and Gwynneth!!! Alan is a DASNI friend in New Zealand… I woke up extra early this morning so that has made for a long day for me. I did get quite a bit done today. I did three loads of laundry, dusted some more, put clean sheets on our bed, gave Mindy a bath, fixed supper, rode the bike, and now I am really tired… It was a beautiful 59 degrees today and I was starting to get cabin fever. Dave told me to wrap up my face with a scarf and go visit with Kathy so I did. It felt really great to be outside for a while… Dave has been busy too. He is loading my digital photo frame with pictures of all our families, friends, and different places we have visited in our motor home. It is a very time consuming job. I am sure enjoying watching the pictures. Dave also watered all our trees and ran the vacumn… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I haven’t felt as good today as I did yesterday, maybe because I got out in all that wind and shook some throw rugs… After a very cold night it warmed up to the 40’s today with lots of sunshine and wind so it felt quite cold… I did some dusting, hosted the DASNI chat, fixed lunch and supper… Dave is needing some adjustments on his hearing aid. He has an appointment next week to get that done… Carole in Missouri called and we did a lot of talking about our Maltese’s. Shiloh is like a little Mother looking after Mindy and she is beginning to realize that she is here to stay. Karmelita seems to be feeling much better after having her teeth extracted. She is just what we needed but no way can she replace our Cindy. We still miss her… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

It is turning real cold here tonight and tomorrow. I heard the chill factor would be zero tomorrow… I fixed lunch, went to the DASNI chat, rode the bike, and the rest of the time I was eating (due to the steroid shot) or using the Nebulizer. I have to use it four times a day… George called… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Dave took me to see Dr. Baugh this morning. She said the lung X Ray that I had yesterday showed that I have Atelectasis. It means that my lungs are stuck together at the bottom. She gave me some breathing exercises to do and taught Dave how to pound gently on my lungs several times a day and she stressed to Dave “GENTLE” LOL She gave me a steroid shot for the Asthma and ordered a nebulizer for me to use. They called a little while ago and they will be delivering it today… Lori called while I was gone and I returned her call… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

This has been one of those busy days. First thing this morning Karmelita had to go to the Vet to have her teeth cleaned and the Vet had to extract three of her teeth. She has a few teeth left, poor baby… Then we went to get Dave’s new hearing aid fitted and installed. So far so good, he can hear me so much better. Next stop was at Mercy Hospital for me to get a chest X-Ray that Dr. Baugh had ordered. Then we made a stop at PetSmart. A bad mistake for us who are pet lovers… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

It was a beautiful day in the 70’s. It is hard to believe it is January. I spent a lot of time outside with the dogs. Mindy loves to play outside. She likes to chase the birds and leaves. Dave and I went to get groomed this morning. We were both looking like a couple of shaggy dogs. Then we took all three dogs to the Vet to get their shots. Karmelita weighed 3 lbs, Shiloh 6.6 lbs and Mindy was 4.8 lbs. The Vet said they were all in good shape except Karmelita needs her teeth cleaned and we plan to have that done soon… We had leftovers for supper. Gave us more time to spend with the dogs… Since Mindy is only five months old, I told the Vet that I would have to live to be past 85 to out live her and she just laughed… For my birthday I received a beautiful Phalaenopsis Orchid and I have had it for almost a month and it is still living. I will post a picture of it… I called George… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Mindy had a better night last night so we got more sleep. She is a puppy and is playful like a puppy but she is so good. She hasn’t tried to chew on anything and doesn’t bite. She is perfect… I wanted to just play with dogs today but it was a Monday and I had things I needed to do… I went to the DASNI chat, cleaned the bathroom, did two loads of laundry and saw the bottom of the hamper. I cooked a chicken for tortilia soup for our supper… I took time to watch the birds and there must have been 25 meadowlarks under the birdfeeders… Tonight I watched another beautiful Oklahoma sunset…Norma in Canada called… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Mindy

Neither Dave nor I got much sleep last night. We are trying to teach Mindy to sleep in a crate like Shiloh and Karmelita do. Mindy has never slept in a crate before. She was very playful today, went outside to potty, and Shiloh has warmed up to her. Karmelita is getting so old she could care less about a new puppy. We love our dogs… Kathy came down with the coat she made for Mindy and Mindy is very appreciative of it because it is quite cold here… I attended church services on television, hosted the DASNI chat at http://www.alzinfo.org/alztalk/flashchat.php and watched a movie “The Children’s Hour… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Kenny and Dave made it home with the plane. They brought it home in a U-Haul truck. Kenny had it out back taxing it today. I think he really likes it… Dave has promised me he won’t fly in it… We went to Midwest City tonight and adopted a Maltese puppy. She is real sweet and I named her Mindy. We stopped at Kenny’s on the way home and borrowed a dog crate for her to sleep in. Kenny, Kathy, and Heather fell in love with her… The other dogs are getting used to having Mindy around. Kathy is making her a coat to wear… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma
