Mary's Place

A web page about the life of a lady who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Name:
Location: Piedmont, Oklahoma, United States

I live in Piedmont, OK, with my Husband of 50 years who has been very supportive. We have 2 sons,David and Kenny, 6 grandkids, and 6 great grandkids. I enjoy feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. Before I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I ran a Licensed Day Care Home for Infants for 15 years. I noticed I wasn't able to remember important things and having problems with my speech. I was experiencing severe headaches. I would get lost. I didn't know how to use the computer. At the age of 55, I told my doctor. I was sent for an MRI. which showed a large amount of shrinkage. I went to a neurologist who sent me for two days of testing. I was diagnosed with dementia of the Alzheimer's type. My husband and I were both in shock. I had to give up my job. I went to see a social worker. I've taken Aricept for 11 years. I can now use the computer and even do this web page. I also host a chat room for dementia patients. This is a very lonely disease. I don't want anyone to feel as lonely as I did when I was diagnosed (I thought I was the only one over 50 that had Alzheimer's). In 2006 I started taking Namenda. Also I was told I have a mixed dementia, Alzheimer's/Vascular.

Thanks to Christopher in Baltimore, Maryland for visiting Mary’s Place and signing my guest book at http://www.angelfire.com/ok4/mari5113/index.html I am back after another break. Sometimes I just need a break… I watched the cows walking along the fence across the highway. I love watching the cows and also the birds at our two bird feeders… I cleaned the bathroom and took care of the houseplants. My Christmas cactus is so pretty in bloom and the pansies that we planted last fall are still blooming after all our freezing weather. The tulips are up and I can’t wait till they bloom… We finally found my video we made of “Forget Me Never” and I watched it today. The movie is about Diana McGowin’s life with Alzheimer’s. Diana also wrote a book “Living in the Labyrinth.” Diana is a good friend of mine and we still keep in touch. I wrote to her after reading her book when I was first diagnosed and I was so thrilled when I received a letter back from her… I am still hosting chats in the DASNI chat room http://www.alzinfo.org/community/alzheimers-chatrooms.asp We with dementia love having our own room to chat in where we can share, laugh, and cry together. The caregivers have their own room in the Alzheimer’s chat room. It was great having Tom in Texas back in chat this afternoon… I didn’t mean to be so windy today… Thanks to all of you who called and sent emails about missing my journal. You all are the ones who help me to keep on keeping on… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Lynn and I went to school together and she plans to attend our 50th Class Reunion… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

This afternoon I got out in the freezing weather and went to see the dentist. He gave me a couple of choices, either have a couple teeth pulled or see a specialist and now I am trying to make a decision. Not easy for me to do. Guess I will wait until I start having a toothache again… I popped us some popcorn and now I am watching the dog show on TV… I hosted the evening DASNI chat at www.alzinfo.org/community/large-alzheimers-chatrooms.asp … Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Christine wrote the book “Dancing With Dementia.” I highly recommend her book… They had a 3.0 Earthquake in the Oklahoma City area today. People in our old neighborhood felt it. I called Doris and Frank and they felt it. Doris said it sounded as if someone ran into their home… We haven’t seen the sun today. Nothing but a drizzling rain… Doctor’s office called and said all my lab work was okay but the doctor said I was developing osteoporosis and I need to start Boniva for that. I watched a good movie this morning and now I can’t remember what it was… We called our friends Alfred and Martha to go out to eat with us tonight. We went to Eischen’s in Okarche for fried chicken. We had heard it was the best in the state. It was at the oldest bar in Oklahoma since 1896. It was very noisy and crowded but the food was good and with all my medicines I take I handled the crowd and noise pretty well… When I got home I hosted chat… David called and he caught me up on all that is going on at the Lockhart farm… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Happy Birthday Ben!!! Ben is our friend in Irving, Texas…
This morning I had to get up early and get out in the freezing weather to go to the doctor’s office for a bone scan and some lab work. They must be checking for everything because he drew four tubes of blood and also I gave a urine specimen… Dave offered to take me to the mall but with the flu outbreak here I didn’t want to take any chances, all I wanted to do was get back home… Since I had been fasting since last night, I had breakfast and then I tried to take a nap. I was so tired. Our phone seldom rings but while I was trying to nap it rang four times in an hour. I gave up. The phone never rings when Dave is napping… I helped fix supper and hosted the afternoon and evening chats… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I am sure glad we got out yesterday and enjoyed the beautiful weather because today it has gone back to being cold. Thirty degrees colder than yesterday… I have been busy as a beaver today. I cleaned the bathroom, stripped the bed and washed our bedding, hung the pillows out to air out, fixed lunch, cleaned the kitchen, hosted chat, and took care of the house plants. Thanks to Carolyn in United Kingdom for visiting Mary’s Place and signing my guest book at: http://www.angelfire.com/ok4/mari5113/index.html
I woke up with a toothache this morning. I am going to have to find a dentist soon…
I was thinking this morning when I woke up about how when we are at the mall or at the grocery store and Dave is pushing me in my wheelchair. Everyone is always smiling and speaking to me. The little ones in their strollers will just stare at me. I think I know what they are thinking “Why is that elderly lady in a stroller?” LOL When I am getting the smiles and the hello’s I am hoping they are giving Dave the same attention for pushing me around… I cleaned the bathroom and did a load of laundry… George in Louisville called and so did David… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Happy Groundhog’s Day! Oklahoma used a bison for a groundhog today and he did see his shadow. Oh NO, six more weeks of bad weather. The sun was out today and melted our snow. But it was much colder out than it looked… We ran out of sunflower seeds yesterday. I can’t stand to see the birds doing without so I sent Dave to get another 50 pound bag of black oiled sunflower seeds… I watered the houseplants and when I did I noticed my Christmas cactus was blooming. I never know when it is going to bloom. It looks like this time it is blooming for Valentine’s Day. One of the Poinsettias left over from Christmas is still looking pretty… I chatted with my DASNI friends, did a load of laundry, and got them all put away and fixed supper… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

It is a brand new month and I hope that means we are getting closer to spring. We had snow falling when I got up this morning but it quit in the early afternoon… I was real disappointed to see that Pogo took my bowling game off. I will still have other games to play but I really was enjoying the bowling… Dave brought the puppies down and all Gracie wants to do is give me kisses on the face. I wouldn’t mind a kiss but she just keeps on kissing me… I folded laundry and helped fix our lunch… Dave says he isn’t sore from his fall yesterday so that is a good thing… Tonight is Dr. Mitch’s chat. I hope I remember to go to it… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma
